The never ending Louvre |
The Louvre is extraordinary though at the same time it can be very frustrating. You can go inside and come out at night, but I doubt if you would be really capable of appreciating the art after a few hours.
If you’re living in Paris and you’re an art geek then the best option is to go there a couple of times and see a different section every time.
If you’re only in Paris for a few days, the Louvre is probably first or second on your bucket list and it should be, but bare in mind that you’re not going there to see the whole collection in one day since it’s impossible.
The Louvre museum website offers all the information you need. Make your decision of what you want to see in the Louvre and go for it. If you want a general glimpse of most of the Louvre and see the top masterpieces you’ll be able to do in around 4-5 hours. There is a list of Louvre’s masterpieces in the website and by grabbing a map at the entrance you’ll easily be able to find their locations.

Which is the best entrance to the Louvre?
Most people don’t know that the Louvre has 4 entrances! That’s why most people will be queueing at the Pyramid entrance and it might take them more then an hour to get inside. Before my trip I had read that by going through the entrance of Carrousel de Louvre I wont have to queue at all and I’ll be getting inside right away! I didn’t really believe it since I was going in mid august but it was actually TRUE! We went to the museum around 2 p.m. on a Wednesday and we were inside within 5 minutes.
So Carrousel de Louvre is the best entrance to the Louvre. Even if you have to queue there it will only take you a few minutes and that makes a whole difference.
The Louvre used to be a royal fortress and palace build by Philip II in the late 12th century. |
What’s the best time to visit the Louvre?
Keep in mind that museums of Paris are closed on Tuesdays, and that includes the Louvre. The Louvre is open from 9-6 pm on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Wednesdays and Fridays the museum is open until 9.45. The best time to visit the Louvre in my opinion is on Wednesdays or Fridays after lunch. You can have your lunch at Carrousel de Louvre food court and get inside the museum directly from there. If you want to go to the Louvre in the morning then you should be there right when it opens if you want to avoid the crowds.
How much do the Tickets cost?
Tickets for the permanent collection are 12€. And every first sunday of the month the entrance is free for everyone. If you’re under 18 or a European residence under 25 you’ll be able to get inside for free. There are a lot of other people who can get free admissions to the Louvre. Here‘s all the information on admissions to the Louvre.
The Louvre is not a just a museum, there’s a whole lot more happening there. So don’t hesitate to see what’s happening through the website before you go, you might find something interesting.
